The Cordillera Blanca is the highest mountain range in Peru and is bounded by an active, low-angle normal fault that is parallel to the active compressional structures in the sub-Andes. This fault has accommodated 12-15 km of slip, yet the initial timing and mechanisms for extension remain poorly constrained. Basin analysis and Ar/Ar thermochronology provide new insights into understanding coeval extension and compression. |
