Abstract
In the late 80s to early 90s, a gasoline leak occurred from a pipe manifold at a San Diego fuel terminal, resulting in a mile+-long groundwater plume of fuel oxygenates, and an 8-acre area of gasoline-affected soils. This talk will walk through the remediation process for this unique site. The subsequent cleanup required multiple remediation techniques, which were continually monitored and adjusted over many years to achieve cleanup in a time-frame specified by the State. This local, real-world example of a large fuel release is a really interesting example of the types of problems geologists work through in the environmental consulting world.
